Start by writing down your topic. Then write down the main concepts within your topic. Think about how your topic can be more specific or less specific. If you are unsure, use your in-class readings to find important ideas related to your topic. Keep an eye out for specialized vocabulary.

If you find a book or article that fits your topic, take a look at the subject headings assigned to it. These subject headings link together similar materials, and can make your search a lot faster.

If you're having trouble, try talking to a friend, a librarian, or your instructor. Sometimes talking about your ideas aloud can help refine them.
